What a birthday bang!

Remember the bithday parties of your younger years? There was usually a surprise for the guests when they showed up. The ones that stayed at home wouldn't get a piece of the cake. They would never meet Bongo the balloon-clown or join the treasure hunt. At Herning Bugs birthday there was everything a birthday should have: Cake, fun and games and the big surprise was the large amount of guests in really cool cars. I posted a few of my favourites. I wonder if there was a better birthday party some where in the world on that same day? One with more than two Fridolins on one spot! I drove my old Golden type 1 and had a rendevouz with the Winther brothers in Silkeborg. We washed the cars and had a ceremonial 1 minute park in the old "pitten" park in front of the Shell station. 15 years ago this was the closest to the cruise nights in the US.

The search for the Cyclop's eye

As you already know I bought a cyclops eye spot for my bus in the UK. Well the housing anyway.. I still need to find the old headlight itself. My chase took me and Guller to this guys collection. His an avid Opel-fan. I couldnt get all the cars in the pictures, but here's a real collector! Theres a late bay window in there that might just be for sale.

Puff the magic dragon

A friend is a stranger you have yet to meet. At Kalø I got to talk to Kasper and Mia who was vacationing in the area. They saw this cool type 3 and bought it straight away - Cool souvenir, huh? Research have shown it is of african origin and not swedish as expected. We met Kasper Mia and the rest of the "Munks" again at Bugs Funny and instantly hit it off. Hope to see you soon again even though the season is kind of over?

Yesteryear was great

Sometimes I just stand around at car-shows. I don't look at the cars. Maybe it's due to my excessive use of a certain sugar rich softdrink, but I just get in "the zone" and become a complete zombie. I do hear what people around me say though. Much like when people remember being submitted to surgery, feeling wide awake. Of course I hear ignorant people thrashing other peoples cars, or old men knowing better, stating that semaphores continued well into the seventies, just when the split frontscreen stopped? But I also hear people saying: "Wonder if they had continued that model" - "Picking up a brand new type 3 ghia would be great!" Think again.. This picture shows the succesor to the type 3 ghia, never produced. I like yesterday a lot more now, knowing how horrible tomorrow actually could look.

Goodbye to the workshop

Yesterday I started moving cars from the workshop to my home adress. It was kind of sad but still the bitter pill came with the promise of a new beginning. I loved being able to drive the three out of five cars by their own power. Remember the ghia is still at the painters. The most fun was driving the fastback. I haven't driven her for a full year. Last summer I installed an electric fuel pump and new fuel lines, and she fired right up. She used to be the one car that needed the most persuation. I also bought 3 new batteries.

Banner ad..

Anyone who spends at least some time on the internet and are remotely into Volkswagens must have seen banners from European Bug-inn everywhere. At times a bit tedious but they made their point and got in contact with everyone. At least those that could read. In my club the oildrippers we are a bit slow. We put up the flags just the day before the event. So if you are in the mood for a slightly smaller, less promoted event drop in on us this weekend. If you're on your way, leave a comment!

Envy is beige!

They say envy is green. I beg to differ! Envy is most certainly beige - it has a bit of brown on it, and an almost useless, but ever so luxurious electricly operated hole in its roof. Good friend "Hønse" brought this proof to Kalø, just as I was getting really sick of waiting for the painter. Many years ago I was a die hard skateboarder, but one summer I just lost interest. I'm absolutely horrified that this experience will kill my vw interest.

10 years of v-dubs...

If I had the time I would have found and posted pictures of people with out of fashion hairstyles and clothes in front of the VW Bugs Herning headquarters. Instead I have posted this invitation for the party. VW Bugs Herning is the bastard offspring of the now defunct but once so glorious VW klub Silkeborg. A lot of the people in the old club actually came from Herning so the birth of their own club was inevitable. Be sure to visit this event.

Heading for disaster

The last picture of a straight ghia. I haven't heard anything from the painter for a couple of weeks. I really hope to cruise the ghia for the "Skagen" event, but the project seems doomed. Boy was this a short season for the ghia... Today I'm movin out of my workshop and hopefully soon the project of my own garage will start.

Errhh... whats up, bug?

We just returned from Bugs Funny #1. I really hope this event will return. It was a lot of fun. I thought I'd go there to show my support for a new danish event and didn't expect to much. We were welcomed by old friends I haven't seen for years. I realized that small local events like this one are really needed. Sad our party of six (three cars) were the only from Jutland. I loved a lot of things but here are the top 5.

1. the bar was decorated with carrots - bug's own favourite!
2. the mile-high type 181 with type 4 engine
3. drawing contest - I should have entered but got nervous...competition was fierce
4. no pocket bikes
5. coco loved the field nearby and enjoyed the beer and carrot menu

New wine on old bottles

A visit from the ugly sister

Yesterday this nice K70 was parked behind my shop. I was in a hury, so I took a picture through my car window. Being watercooled jet with some of the aircooled charm I think she's cool. Could you imagine RO80 fuchs, extensive slamming and Golf Vr6 engine? Of course you would keep the golden hue, the beige interiour and the whole 70'ies detective TV-series feel. I've noticed a change in popularity of Golf mark 1's and T3 transporters so why skip these weird rides? I wish there was a "weird vw selecta" Then I could show you...

Taking my best friend for a ride...Vol 2.

Coco got the chance to enjoy the spirit of the nineties. Nobody installs Porsche seats in Mercedes fabric anymore for their dogs to enjoy. Spending an entire weekend installing a fold down armrest from a Ford Taunus in a beetle seat is not common seen. Not a lot of Britax ragtops being sold these days either. I do enjoy the car and its "old tricks" once in a while though.

Good taste lasts longer

This beauty caught my eye on a shopping trip to Aarhus. I remember this car from years back when it was owned by "Detail Henrik" of Aalborg. Before it was sprayed green I beleive it was blue with a type 4 engine. I took a couple of shots of it before I was on my way. When seeing the picture again I got to notice the Polo 6n in the background. I wonder if those ugly taillights and tribal vinyl graphichs will still be as cool as this cars motometer gauge set in 50+ years? Invest in precious metal!

Cyclop on its way

I found this weird third light for splitbusses on Volkszone and had to have it. I haven't seen a lot of these in mainland Europe but they seem to be a big hit in the UK. You either love them or hate'em. I think they are really cool and can't wait to receive it. Thanks to Ray for holding the item while I found a friend with PayPal. Does anybody know the story behind these. Are they from fire and rescue vehicles? Where they sold as accessories or are they just headlights of 1940'ies US cars?

Sleeping beauty

A few years back the later version of the bus was something you didn't think twice about cutting up for parts. They have however gotten a lot more popular and prices have soared. Søren, Jesper and Christian of Team Angora was a bit ahead of time as they actually cut their teeth on bay windows. At the time they were plenty, and they were dirt cheap. The three friends were young and money were tight. Jesper had a panelvan on Mercedes AMG alloys, Christian had a late pickup with a 3.2 Porsche engine and tranny and Søren SP had among others this project.

The car itself is a 1971 crew cab. The fact that the indicators sit in the bottom on the front panel makes it an "early bay". Søren spend a lot of time restoring the body, drilling out original spotwelds, making up parts from scratch. But Søren also had some great ideas along the way. How about a "walk through" crewcab? (walkthrough means access between the cab and the passenger area, not to be confused with double door!) He drilled out all the parts from a deluxe bay and grafted the option in. A option never offered by Volkswagen but very cool. And how about some sunshine for the crew? A ragtop from a Renault Twingo fitted the bill. Genuine Porsche brakes will make the car stop when Søren wants to. There is plenty of other cool tricks in this car, and Søren has kindly offered to keep me updated. I miss the times when people mixed parts from different cars and styles. The project has been sleeping for a few years. But as Søren has sold of his famous airride squareback, the itch is back..
